6 Ways to Recognize an Ethical Clothing Brand

Us Style Junkies know that being educated is essential to living sustainably, so here are six ways to recognize an ethical clothing brand:

1. Look for transparency in production

  • Sustainable clothing brands understand that in order to have an ethical process, It’s not just about using recycled material, every part of the process must be ethical to people and the planet. And transparency is essential when it comes to accountability and awareness, so ethical brands shouldn’t hide their production methods- beware of any brand that does!

2. Know that an ethical brand is different from an ethical product or collection

  • An ethical brand encapsulates sustainability as a whole, from fair wages to ethical manufacturing and eco-friendly production; ethical brands must be conscious of where the fabric is sourced and how it’s manufactured and distributed.

3. Look for Fair Trade Certified Seal

  • The Fair Trade Seal on a product signals that it was made under fair trade standards that promote sustainable livelihoods, safe working conditions, protection of the environment, and strong, transparent supply chains. So keep an eye out for this when you’re shopping!

4. Look for brands using sustainable materials

  • Brands that use sustainable materials are one step closer to being considered ethical, sustainable materials could be recycled or eco-friendly fabrics that prioritize the long-term safety of the planet and ecosystem. Fabrics and clothing made out of animals or animal byproduct is a huge no-no!

5. Investigate if the brand engages in Fair Labor practices

  • Doing research on a brand before purchasing from them makes all the difference, fair labor is just as important in eco-friendly fabrics and production when considering how ethical a brand is.

6. Look at the price and ask yourself what the real cost is.

  • Oftentimes, cheap clothes come at a serious cost. Many companies are able to offer consumers incredibly low prices because the earth is paying the price. The use of cheap and unethical labor is also common, and people are paid unlivable wages working in sweatshops just so others can wear clothes at the cheapest possible price!
