How to Build a Timeless and Sustainable Closet

In this day and age mass production and consumption is at an all-time high, with fast fashion brands running through trend cycles and utilizing the cheapest possible means of manufacturing. Maybe generations before us can remember a time of tailor-fit clothing and high-quality fabrics, many of which are around today with a lifespan of 20+ years- clothing that we consider “vintage”. The consistent decline in clothing quality, durability, and tailoring came as the masses looked to large companies that began to focus more on low-cost manufacturing rather than true wearability and style. However, it's not impossible to shop sustainably and build a timeless wardrobe based on your personal style in 2023; in fact, some might say we have access to so many new tools to help!

Here are some simple ways to start building a timeless closet today:

  • Develop your personal and unique style: it’s so easy to fall into trends nowadays with social media producing tons of content every day; many people find themselves replicating the influencers they see online instead of figuring out what fashion means for them. Find a timeless style that you’re comfortable with, this will help you buy pieces that last rather than constantly buying new clothes so you can keep up with everyone else! While there’s nothing wrong with seeking inspiration, you must find what works for you and fits you the best.

  • Thrift, Sell, Repeat: Thrifting vintage and second-hand clothing is one way to shop sustainably by prolonging the life cycle of a clothing item. This is why it's essential to invest in valuable high-quality clothing; whether this is monetary, sentimental, or durability-based value, shopping with intention makes a big difference. Online consignment stores such as Depop, eBay, Vestaire Collective, Poshmark, and TheRealReal offer consumers an opportunity to buy and resell valuable clothing; investing in clothing while having the space to figure out your style and sell pieces that you’ve outgrown is one way to build a timeless closet.

  • No more hauls: Overconsumption is a big problem in our current society, with clothes getting cheaper and cheaper people to feel more comfortable buying large amounts of clothing every month to keep up with trends and also cycle out the low-quality clothing. But don’t get it twisted, just because you’re buying expensive clothing doesn’t mean you’re shopping sustainably; yes, pricier clothes are higher quality and harder to access but it all comes down to pacing. Buying fewer clothes that hold actual value to you will help you build healthy and sustainable shopping habits and a wardrobe that is a real reflection of you. Also reflect more on the origins of the clothing you wear and figure out if their manufacturing process prioritizes ethics or profit, this will help you filter out the low-quality brands; disinvesting in fast fashion builds a better future for everyone.
