Trends and Other Technicalities

Trends are coming and going quicker than we’ve ever seen in history because of technology and social media; the age of virality is well and alive and society dictates people should be most interested in keeping up with their peers than realizing their own individuality. Sustainability at its core rejects the idea of trends and virality, it calls for longevity and durability through style and quality clothing. But as clothes get cheaper and social media becomes more popular, style and longevity aren’t the focus of everyone’s mind. Priorities have changed, but why? And how has the prioritization of trends impacted the fashion world and the world, period?

Sharing individuality on social media has quickly led to the mass bandwagoning of different styles and aesthetics by those who look to influencers and celebrities as inspiration, a lot of people feel the need to imitate them in order to imitate a life that they perceive as “better”. Style Junkie encourages fearless individuality because we believe this is a huge step towards sustainable fashion practices; when people don’t tie their identity to an external entity they don’t feel the need to change constantly to fit a mold that wasn’t made for them.

Trends aren’t all bad, they make people feel like a part of something greater than themselves, and community is a huge green flag to us, but knowing where to join in and take a step back is important. If you feel yourself switching out your wardrobe every couple of weeks, or looking in the mirror and not identifying with who you are maybe it's time to take a step back and evaluate who you are truly serving. Trends favor fast fashion companies whose whole business model relies on influencers, trend cycles, and people’s unwillingness to go against the mold and develop a personal style. These companies pump at cheap and low-quality clothing that makes it hard to build a timeless closet that represents you as an individual; any company that relies on your dissatisfaction to make sales and pushes you to the point of overconsumption is not worth your coin!

Community is everything, and we all need to feel like we belong; instead of coming from a place of fear and conformity, let's lead with love and care and think about what our shopping habits can do to the environment and our communities!
